PROJECT: Bookmark - Social good app
ROLE: UX design & research DURATION: July 2022
Challenges
1. Create an app that allows users to link accounts and credit cards for easy donations.
2. Make the website responsive to various screen sizes that consumers will use.
Understanding the user
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research were avid book-readers who wanted to give to charities that supported literacy..
This user group confirmed initial assumptions, but research also revealed that when it came to actually giving, users were not following-through as giving usually involved extra steps to find charities and signup, taking time out of their busy schedules. User admitting that they usually just forgot.
Starting the design
Pen and paper wire frames became lo-fi prototypes with AdobeXD and the first round of usability study was completed. Using the completed set of digital wire frames, I created a low-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow enabled the user to make an account and make a donation, so the prototype could be used in a usability study. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wire frames to mock-ups.
Solution 1
During the usability study users were asking for a way to link online shopping accounts to the Bookmark app.
Solution 2
The designs for screen size variations included mobile, tablet, and desktop. I optimized the designs to fit specific user needs of each devices and screen size.
Hi-Fi Prototype
After a usability study and updates made to the user flow that allowed for linking accounts and saving payment methods the high fidelity prototype was completed. you can view it here.
Takeaway
I learned that even though the problem I was trying to solve was a big one, diligently going through each step of the design process and aligning with specific user needs helped me come up with solutions that were both feasible and useful.
